  • There is a previous thread on this, the only one to buy is the Honda 537 HRX HY , hydrostatic variable speed, blade break and will collect. We have tried every mulcher on the market and the Honda outperforms them all by some way it is also rear wheel drive whereas most of the others are front wheel drive which you have to push on inclines. We have 3 which are doing on average 30 hrs wk each on rough commercial sites, all are over 3 years old with zero maintenance apart from blades and have been totally reliable even with regular abuse from multiple operators, buy one !

    • I will have a look at this one  i was looking for a dedicated mulching mower  how is the wet collection on this mower  coukd this mower be used full time or is it just for rough cuts?

      • Hi Dougie, the wet collection is good. We have found by trial and error that running the back wheels one setting higher than the front wheels gives the best performance for both collection and mulching. Ours are permanently set on setting 2 at the front and setting 3 at rear.

Yes we use ours full time on all types of grass it's not a rough cutter, the only reason I mentioned " rough commercial sites" was to demonstrate the durability.

They have been a game changer for us as we now only need to carry one mower to either mulch or collect , just move a handle to swap between functions so no messing about with mulch plugs or swapping blades. Make sure if you buy to get the HY not the VY which has squeezy forward speed controls on the handle which we don't like.

To sum up they are lovely light manouevarable mowers which do a fantastic job, they are the only pedestrian mowers we use apart from our rear roller Hayter 56 Pro's and cannot recmmend highly enough for reliability, performance and operator comfort.

One thing I forgot to mention is how important variable speed is when mulching so you can adapt forward speed to conditions, don't think that any of the dedicated mulchers have this ? And are fixed speed.

        • Great sounds like this could be the machine i will check if my local dealer has them in stock hopefully  can get a trail i have been using etesia with the mulch plug bit of a pain changeing the blade and puting the plug in most of the time i just remove it and just collect the grass its not the best at mulching

Where are you based as we are downsizing and have a couple we are getting rid of, we loved them but the jobs we have kept on means we have no need for them as we are back to a sole van again?

  • I have very limited experience in the industry but followed Peter Sellers recommendation on a 537 although I got the VY version and I can honestly say it's such a difference coming from Hyundai. The larger deck, twin blade design, the lever that allows you to collect/mulch on the go without having to carry extra bits. The thing I like about it the most though is the folding handles. Very happy

  • Hi my local has one left in stock is the 19ins. Version the same? Is the airflow better on the 21 ins aNd how does this compare to the etesia pro 46 thanks

  • I have the stihl and viking mulchers, they are fantastic, rock solid machines that cab take abuse all day, and leave a good finish, stihl all day long, had a 537 a few years ago to try it out, sold it within a few months as I preferred my viking, just recently tried a 437 hrx, sold it within a week,

I would seriously consider an Etesia Pro46 - we have a small fleet of them as well as a Pro53 (but they cost £££).

They mulch flawlessly and when you take the mulch plug out they also collect!

    • do you need a different blade to mulch with the etesia pro46 i have  etesia pro46 just dont have a mulch plug
