Mares tail

We have been asked by a customer to treat there back garden which is infested with mares tail.  There are no shrubs, grass or plants as the area is either paved or in gravel.  They have asked that I relay the patio at the same time.  The worst of the area is the patio itself with each joint being full of mares tail.

What can I treat this with and any other suggestions?  I am considering laying weed control under the slabs.

  • The weedkiller for mares tail is called Kurtail, Progreen do it but no doubt others as well. Too late now, you will have to hit it in the spring.
You shouldn't need weed control fabric under well laid slabs.

Kurtail / Kurtail Gold has been around the longest and is a proven product on horsetail (equisetum arvense). It needs no bruising or bashing about before spraying but will likely need re-treatment a few times - depending how infested it is. If you are chopping down into the soil you risk root disturbance and awakening the beast as it will try to grow back twice as much as before once spring hits...

Weed membrane will not stop it growing through at all - it pops up through tarmac and weak paving joints..! Solid concrete will hold it back but you will need strong, full mortar pointing - not engineered sand or or brush in stuff....even then I would expect it to poke through after a while or seek out weak spots...any chance of preparing a solid 2-3"concrete bed for the slabs?

Happy to chat if you want talk through other options..?

  • A friends dad now in his 80, s told me about going to the local Gasworks in Belfast and collecting a container of Gas water. Apparently they bubbled the gas through this water to remove impurities. When put on a path or gravel no weeds for years to come. It does go to show, health and safety in the workplace has moved on a bit.
  • Try a systemic chemical herbicide, such as gallop which will kill the roots aswell.
