  • Hello David

Sorry to ask the obvious but is there a specific site reason why has it got to be acid free?

    Steve
    • a lot of indian or sand stone has natural metals in it, normal brick acid can make the metals rust and rust spots will appear on the surface of the slabs, i remember someone posting pics on here a few years ago

      • Phil is right I have used brick acid before and it damaged the surface of the stone flags might have to use the mn builders clean again. Someone told me to try vinegar I have to repoint the flags after I clean them up

Safety Klean might do the job - never used it but seen it recommended. www.tensiduk.com

Safety Klean is an effective, safe alternative to acidic compounds for cleaning brick, tile and concrete surfaces. Safety Klean rids new masonry construction of excess mortar, dirt and other common job site soiling. It is ideal for projects where traditional acidic cleaners are not permitted. Non fuming Safety Klean contains no hydrochloric or other traditional inorganic acids and is safe for use on and around most metal surfaces, indoors or out. It is up to 70% more effective than citric and glycolic acids, and 50% more effective than phosphoric acid.

  • Yeh, brick acid is a definite no no but there are other acid based products that can be used.  I have regularly used Lithofin Builders clean (acid based) on Sandstone (NEVER USE IT ON LIMESTONE!!!) and never experienced any issues.  Start of by diluting it 10/1 and incrementally increase the dosage if required.  This should shift the mortar stains.  If your unsure do a test patch first in an indiscrete area

    Cheers
