London Congestion Charge

One for any 'London' based landscaping contractors that travels into London - how do you account for the congestion charge if you have a regular job or project within the zone ?

- Do you detail it and show as an item ?
- Absorp into costs ?

Have you taken any steps to reduce the possibility of being charged, ie
- V early starts/long day/late finish ?
- smaller van ?

or have you even just turned jobs down ?

  • This hit at the same time as I stopped working in London, but I remember the abuse of the charge people were making. The problem initially was that traders with multiple jobs during the day were charging the full amount on every call: clearly a con.

Pass it on as a fixed cost, and there's no issue?

I don't see why anyone would absorb such a clear extra cost, nor why they'd turn work down just because of a tiny amount that is simple to add on to the bill. London prices should be the highest in the country, so an extra £11.50 a day is pretty irrelevant.

  • When we have to work within the congestion zone we just add it onto the cost of the job. The client is told and they always understand.

"A London council is hitting motorists with on-the-spot fines if they are caught leaving diesel engines running.

Islington council will fine drivers £20 if they leave a diesel engine running while stationary in the north London borough.

The plan is revealed just days after Mayor Boris Johnson announced that motorists with diesel engines would be hit with a £10 increase in the congestion charge from 2020."

  • Does that make it 30 quid in Islington or are they passing a tenner over to the GLC? Are ice cream prices going up? The ice cream machine runs off the vehicle engine's power so the engine keeps running when the van stops. Will the van owner/driver get the fine every stop? As one example.

You think it's hard as a visitor? Real people have to live in that nightmare! Permanently!
