Effective treatment for ivy

Hello guys.What is the best way to stop ivy growing? Got a customer where it is covering the garage. Is it best to try and get all the roots out or best to treat with some chemical?Thanks

Advice needed!!! Ivy strangling cherry tree

I need an elegant solution to help save this tree. Some good Samaritan has recently cleared a 6 inch area just above the base of the trunk, certainly that is not a solution.The ivy is 1-1.5" thick and many branches are not producing fruit or leaves.
