Lightweight hedge trimmer

Can anyone recommend to me a reasonably priced lightweight hedge trimmer? I already have a stihl long pole trimmer, which is great for the taller ones, but could do with a standard trimmer to deal with some of the smaller hedges in my gardens. it wouldn't get masses of use, so one for domestic gardens would be adequate, but would prefer not to go down the electric route as I don't have access to power in some of my gardens.

Whar about the stihl or husqvarna battery trimmers ? Might do the job for you.

  • Yes, I've just been browsing the Stihl website (like you do on a Saturday morning!), they do a good battery one, but once the battery weight is added it makes it the same weight as their lightweight hs46 petrol trimmers. I think I need to go to our local dealership and have a play!
  • I have an hs45(stihl) for smaller jobs/domestic gardens, its the 24" model but it is so light you could use it all day. It isn't the most powerful hedgecutter in the world, but that's the trade off.The fuel tank is quite small, but I suppose this helps with the weight & prevents fatigue. My local dealer has them in for £220 at the moment.

The stihl HS46 is an excellent machine.

It is lightweight, has really low vibes and seems to cut much quicker than the bigger hs86's!

I don't own one but I have used one for long periods of time. The only thing that outs me off buying one is the short cutter length compared to the bigger machines!

We've just got one of the 46's on recommendation from our dealer. It is a good lighweight and cost effective hedgetrimmer. It's a not a true pro model but for short periods of light work it's great (like Buxus, small hedges, shaping etc).

Short blade, no bump end available means you need to pick your battles, but at the price it's almost throwaway if it goes kaput.

  • Sounds like the 46 might do it! Can you clarify what is a 'bump end' Gary?

I call it a 'Bump end', but it's real name is a Tip Protectotor (which allows you to work or run lightly along the ground). It   stops you 'punching' the ground when the blades are oscilating.

  • I use an HS56, lovely bit of kit and lightweight. Has a tip protector also. Can wave it around all day quite happily.

Sarah, can I clarify as I made a mistake, we've just got one of the 45's which does not have a tip protector - The 46 does have a tip protector (?). It gets used for light work & soft hedge shaping as I mentioned.

For the real heavywt stuff, it's HS86's but the price difference is major...

  • Yes, for the amount I would use it, I don't want to invest heavily, so I think the 46 will do the job. I need to chat to my local dealer!
