Lifting turf strip to plant hedge

I am going to quote for planting a Golden Leylandii hedge, about 10m long, using 80-100cm plants. It will involve lifting a strip of relatively newly laid turf along the line of a fence (it's on a new housing estate). Does anyone have any idea how long it would take to lift the turf manually, or would it be cost effective to hire a turf cutter? Thanks for any advice.

About an hour will be easy:)
It's not worth getting a turf cutter in on hire. If you had one then use it but a turf spade or even just a spade won't take long.
  • Thanks Richard. I thought hiring one might be a bit much. From your estimate it looks like I could probably get it lifted in the time it would take to collect the machine :)

Probably:) once you get the first bit out. If you get on your knees you are at the right level to just slide spade under the rest

    How newly laid?
If you get the job maybe best to lift the turf straight away before it beds in and then come back when you can to plant.

Still easier to lift new turf whichever way its laid.

  • Thanks for the advice. The turf should be fairly new - it's a new build estate and the builder is still selling houses up there. I'm going up to look at the job tonight.

I cannot find Golden Leylandii locally so will probably be looking online. Has anyone used hedginguk.com before? Their prices look significantly cheaper than a few others I've looked at.

I've used them before but I have a feeling the prices shown are subject to VAT. Can't quite remember and may be wrong. The plants were fine though
