Morning all,

Could someone give me a little insight into the life expectancy/maintenance of the decorative reed/brushwood screening that can be used in the garden?

The good wife says she likes the idea of covering the end fence in something similar to the below link, would be approx. 8-10 meters of the stuff.

Easy enough job to do I know, but how long does it last? or does it start to fade/deteriorate after a while?

Thanks in advance

  • I used some two years ago, it looks awful now: so many bits have broken off it's very patchy.

I'd say the cheap DIY-store ones would be best replaced annually, two years at most.

  • That was my suspicion, I know its not mega expensive, but I estimate £50-70 approx. for 8 metres of one of them.

    Thanks for the heads up

  • There are different grades. I think the one my customer bought was B&Q, I'd imagine Wickes would be similar cheap price, cheap end of the quality spectrum!

One thing, mine was to cover a trellis, not a fence panel, so will have had more wind damage than your's will get.

Worth a look, as it's not a huge amount if you have to replace it after a couple of years.

  • You're better spending a bit more and getting the Willow screening. 2mx4m for £49.98 from b&q. A customer of mine just got this and we put it up last week. It is by far the sturdiest of all the screens (bamboo/reed/brushwood). I think it'll easily last three years.
  • my brushwood has been crap for years so only about 5yrs and its protected by hedge/ sheltered. was new 8 yrs ago . ive bought some £5 rolls bamboo from a factory shop to replace it so : better but costing me only £10 for split bamboo 1m x 8 totals.

waste of money unless u need it.
