Liability and Business Insurance

Good morning,

I am currently insured with Simply Business, which seemed like an affordable option. A couple of weeks ago, I strmmed a new customers edges and wack, double glazed window gone. Went through insurance but declined because excess is £300 and the replacement was just above that. I have the cash for contingency like this but would like to try and reduce excess fee if possible. I looked at Aviva, about the same excess . Any recommendations for good insurance brokers or should I stay with Simply?

Regards

  • Michael, we have all done it part of the cut and thrust of our industry ! We never claim for this sort of thing and generally nothing under 1k due to excess and hike in premiums which follows. Remember to get some sort of receipt as it tax deductible which helps. My personal opinion of the online insurance industry is not favourable, an acquitance had his Sprinter stolen and even after a long stressfull battle ender up with only 60% of it's value. When changing provider for all his business insurance because of this he found out that many risks were not covered by his previous policy, dread to think what would have happened if he had made a claim. He has gone to the NFU, more money but piece of mind from an insurer who understands his business, generally good reports from people I know who use them.

I can't recommend our broker as they have been taken over and have no experience how they are going to perform.

But I would not be using an internet provider. You need someone who understands your business and will fight your corner in the event of a claim, maybe I will be contradicted by other users of the forum on this but remember cheapest is not always best !

  • I went with Direct Line last time............. it was significantly cheaper than Simply Business     Still a £250 excess though

Anything like a double glazed window is easy to fix and sealed units cost around £35.00 if you go to a manufacturer. If you are quite handy you can sort this for not a lot money and time.

  • Thanks for recommendations. I wouldn't feel confident replacing a window nor am I Fensa registered. Best to pay someone professional and keep his custom, good paying customer with lots of work. It's a learning curve for me to stop being lazy, move the furniture so it allows me to strim in opposite direction.

  • We use a plan, now Howdens, for all our business insurance.
