Laying of turf???

I have just witnessed something unbelievable today....I have been watching another contractor strip turf using a 3tonne excavator and then laying new turf straight away without any further ground prep.Further more, the new turf was then rolled with a heavy duty Tarmac roller after laying.I estimate that around 600m was laid today using this method.Am I missing something? Have I been laying turf incorrectly for the last decade?I will try and post a picture later!Nick

  • I cant imagine why they would use a tarmac roller on it, sureley that would heavily compact it? Where these guys proper landscapers or just tarmac layers/builders?
  • i would love to see pictures now and in three months!

I bet they were building contractors (I do hope so for all our sakes !) ?

I've seen similar approaches to landscaping on 'new developments' where they try to save money...

Here is the picture, taken from my phone over the fence.

I had to take it - otherwise no one would believe me!

The contractors claim to be "Landscape Gardeners", at least that's what it says on the side of their van.

I won't name them but I am sure that their work will speak volumes.

I don't think the tarmac roller is such an issue provided it is used slowly and on low revs and without the vibrator on: it is otherwise no different to any other roller. Saying that, I'm not an advocate of rolling new turf in. I've done it but I prefer tamping with scaffold boards.

I worked on a golf course when I left school and one of the 'old ones' (he used to tend to the horses who pulled the gang mowers when he started there as a boy) has an implement which was referred to as the 'thumper' - a 18" square oak board attached to a scaffold pole handle - the turf was laid and then thumped to an inch of its life; mainly on tee banks and green surrounds where a roller couldn't get.

It seems harsh but perversely it never appeared to cause the grass or the rootzone any particular problems.

  • Nice bit of racism in the public arena, well done.
