Lawn edging - manual or petrol

I'm just pondering how to improve my efficiency at the moment, it's been a vry wet day so sat here thinking - not good.Does anyone use a petrol edger (I've been looking at the Atom) or is the plank & half moon iron still the best option?

  • If i have to re-edge a border I would use a half moon, but I do all my maintenance edging with a strimmer, no attachment, just the strimmer, I can honestly say I dont have a pair of edging shears in my van.
  • To be honest I don't have a problem with the half moon, apart from the fact that I've gone thru loads this year. I tried the Stihl combi but I think it's a waste of money & back breaking. Maybe the Mantis edging attachment - I'll look at the Backo
  • My half-moon is invaluable to re-cut borders that have been overgrown, neglected and don't have anything you could call a defined edge. Shears simply would never be able to create a fresh edge in this situation.

I did maintenance for about 7 years, I used light but strong petrol strimmer. I noticed that were the garden had lawn edging installed I used the strimmer much less. More important when I did stimm in a garden that had lawn edging installed - no matter from what- It took only third of the time!!!!! why- no vertical needed- and as the edging used as a guide you can walk much faster- and less chance to get wrong.

than I was doing garden design for few years and I installed in every garden lawn edging. Why because ~I wanted my gardens to look well and it was another job to do.

In the last 3 years I sell lawn edging- as most of you know- the reason- I really wanted to do green things- I am sure gardening and gardens are important to health and environment - but do remember that my hands were shacking at the end of the summer from holding a strimmer for so many hours.

So I provide strong edging in a roll made from 100% recycled material- it is strimmer proof and mow over- and not too hard to install.

I got some good news- Just got the new stock with heavy duty edging in brown colour and in green colour. in addition extra heavy duty ones for straight lines.
    hope it helps.
  • Get the best quality edging shears you can.
  • Good quality half-moon edger with the blade kept sharp, and decent set of edging shears. The half-moon is invaluable, and is the only bit of kit to use when wanting to cut new edges in virgin ground. It also works wonders at "knocking up" once you've weeded and dug over the border, to create that definition twixt grass and soil.
  • nice wooden/ stainless border spade? or back-saver spade ..........
  • So Marc, a host of suggestions. What do you reckon?
  • Indeed horny hand to be honest I don't think there is any real substitute to the half moon & shears.
