Its very open, an old lawn. It's only gone like this this year.
Thank you for your reply Gareth.
have you tried lifting the dead bits to see if its loose as it could be something like chafer grub
is there kid or dogs/cats use it has it been treated before it looks a bit shaded with the fence round it is there a drainage problem it could be a fungal prob such as red thread
needs treating for moss (everyone's got it this year)
given it's sudden demise my first investigation would be to look for chafers or leather jackets. Cut 6" squares and lift in various places and have a good poke around. Also query whether lots of bird pecking activity. Eliminate these first before moving on.
Thanks again
Hard to determine fully from a photo but good info from others already. Could the customer have spilled something on the patch? If not fungal or insect/grub, seems to be lack of nutrients and water. Keep us posted!
from a distance it looks like wood rush. that has that grey/lifeless look
looking at pic 2, it looks like dog lichen (the fungi) and lots of dead grass. I would not be too concerned about the moss as there is more than ever in our area at the moment. Is the lawn prone to water logging? compaction or poor ground could cause the lichen also could be a lack of nutrients. try to improve the soil structure, scarify / rake, aerate, topdress and seed and keep on top of a balanced feed throughout the year (if the customer allows)

Thank you Nick, I don't think the customer will want to spend any extra on it.
I only mow once every 2 weeks. 20 minute job. I was asking members for my own reference/knowledge for the future and to better myself.
Thank you for taking the time to help.
Craig.
