  • Hi there,

We use the Dewalt, self setting up Laser levels on our projects.

They are easy to set up and use and are accurate enough for our works.

Most of our kit on site is Dewalt which means there are always a few charged batteries about so never a problem of finding batteries lacking to run it.

Make sure you get a Laser detector that is waterproof as it makes it very easy to read off the staff and work to fixed measurements.

  • We use a Topcon unit, its rechargeable, very tough, self levelling and if you buy the more expensive version, you can even programme it to automatically set falls, very useful for long drainage runs.

Not cheap, but good stuff rarely is.

    Tommy.

  • The company I subcontract for use spectra levels they are really robust and easy to use.

  • I couldnt really justify spending big money on a topcon or lecia because i wouldn't use it that much. I ended up buying a second hand lasermark lm800 which has great functionality and does grades etc but parts are hard to get as i found out when i needed a new battery.

In hindsight i wish i had spent a few quid more and bought a good second hand topcon or lecia as bits are very easy to get hold of.

Just make sure you get a self levelling as its so quick to set up you will use it much more. A manual levelling type is so fiddly you will just leave it at home.

  • I use a fairly budget self-levelling model from www.laser-level.co.uk. It works well, service was excellent.

  • I have a sprectra LL400 single grade laser with detector and remote for sale, ,if interested contact me, selling because bought new laser ,

  • ive got a leica rugby 100 its a great bit of kit automatic level and you can also set a grade manually- although thats a little more hassle than its worth
there alot of money although you can pick up second hand ones for fairly reasonable prices.

  • I was facing the same decision recently and got a Nivcomp digital altimeter, which uses water pressure difference in a hose to give very accurate readings

Slightly different from a laser level but a similar price, but I love it...
    a) you can use it on your own
    b) its dead easy to use and mm perfect
    c) it can measure levels round corners
    d) it has a +_range of 2.5m
    e) it all fits in a little case
    f) you don't need anywhere to balance the tripod as there is no tripod
    g) you can get measurements off narrow things like fence tops very easily

    I thoroughly recommend it!!

    Bought from here http://www.laser-level.co.uk/products/digital-altimeters/nivcomp-di...

  • Hi Rosie

That Nivcomp digital altimeter looks good, i used one of these http://www.ziplevel.co.uk/ a while back and thought it was great but expensive where as the nivcomp is a third of the price.

One question, can the Nivcomps handheld unit be used on its horizontal plane (ie on its back ) or just used vertical like shown in the video ? It looks like quite a big unit in length 8 inches perhaps ? And this could cause a problem when finding low near to ground levels like brickwork damp proof course etc if it only works vertical ?

    Thanks

    Torin
