lol i agree i used to work in a accident repair garage and was orgainsing a golf day for lads at the garage and got the same offer for repairing the owners battered car a free years membership naturally the repairs would far exceed this! so i would loose out
Its great if it works and is a like for like offer that you can mutually benefit from. I am currently working on my architects garden in exchange for drawings for my upcoming extension. We both benefit from an exchange of skills.
A direct exchange of skills of relative value is fair - but a big national chain trying this on to save £thousands is out of order - cheeky at best and down right rude and offensive at best - probably an under-performing gym site with management looking to cut costs.
but gym membership? Jesus! I don't think so :-)
Did a small tidy up job last week for a set of nearly new 3m Abru double ladders. It was an old lady whos husband had died and when i went to quote she asked if i wanted them, so i told her i'd do the job in exchange.
Luckily i was going to buy some a couple of weeks ago..
You cant blame them for trying, if you don't ask then you don't get.
I would not be interested. However if a pub approached me with a similar deal then that would be a different story!
What view would the HMRC take on this ?
An exchange, trade or skills swap - it's all declarable and possibly liable for VAT :-(
"VAT and barter transactions
If you supply services or goods (new or second-hand) and receive other goods or services in payment, there are two separate supplies:
You must account for VAT, and so must your customer if they're VAT-registered. The VAT treatment is the same as for part-exchanges. You must both account for VAT on the amounts you would each have paid for the goods or services if there had been no barter and they had been paid for with money."
Exactly right Gary.
