kikuyu grass - anyone heard of it?

It's apparently a (fairly coarse) type of grass that's quite resilient to bitch spot/dog urine. No mention of it in a forum search so I thought i'd see if anyone had any experience. I expect it's so aggressive that it becomes a pest, and probably shows up the patches somehow anyway, but in a well confined lawn it might do the trick. My clients do let their dogs out on the lawn (obviously far from the ideal scenario) but are very good at clearing it up and watering in the offensive materials so i'm trying to give them a solution. If they were like other "past clients" and thought it was my job, I wouldn't even try.

  • Yep i've heard of it - Its not possible to grow it anywhere in Europe full stop.
Its not frost tollerant and needs consistent temps above 20 degress c to germinate, and above 10 to grow.

Its native to east africa... give away its a tropical grass.

Its also a noxious weed in most of the world where it can grow due to its aggressive speed of growth... meaning the US spends alot of money on trying to wipe it out!
If it could grow here, Id imagine it would be against the law to do so for that reason.

  • It is used on golf courses abroad use it in the rough tuff to get out of
  • Thanks David, I knew someone would have come across it, or researched it before.

As I suspected, there's always a catch. The problem with the internet is it's used by people from so many climates, still, plenty more crazy solutions for people to try. I take the view that it's not a problem with the grass anyway, but with the user.

    Cheers for the tip,

    Rob

  • Agree, I spent all my childhood on that grass, In Israel, but it is warm grass, that grow really fast.
