Put in as much as you can - so if you think people will look for Gardeners in cumbernauld, garden services cumber etc etc, also put in miss spellings too as some canny spell! More the merrier just try not to repeat the words too many times of they will be taken as spam.
This is what I've been told anyway so hope it helps!
I too would like to think that if I typed "Alan McMillan's lawns grass cutting service cumbernauld" I'd get noticed.
None of your potential clients know you. So think carefuly.

Having keywords hidden on a web page i thought was a big no no as google bots will pick this up, and not in a good way!

You are looking at key phrases NOT keywords if you are going to take on competitive on the money categories.
An example here if you need a quick 101

It's worth bookmarking Google's Webmaster Tools SEO page as a goof reference point.
I would also read Google SEO .PDF - it's very clear.
It's worth bolting a few extra pages on to your site either as advice pages or as a blog. Based on what Richards says, you can include all of the right phrases within the text and it can be so much stronger than 'stuffing' keywords into templates (just make sure all pages are linked).
Hope this helps?

When writing copy, - don't we all over the internet, - count how many times you have written We, I and us, compared to you, your and yours - your website should be all about the benefits to your customer, not what you do.
When I started, I found a copywriter that wanted their garden looked after, and a photographer that wanted a planting design, - I got great website words and a professional photograph which made all the difference to the price I could charge.
having read your website, i'd recommend you read
