  • The key words are only used by the search engines - this is what gets you up the rankings so make them worthwhile!!

Put in as much as you can - so if you think people will look for Gardeners in cumbernauld, garden services cumber etc etc, also put in miss spellings too as some canny spell! More the merrier just try not to repeat the words too many times of they will be taken as spam.

This is what I've been told anyway so hope it helps!
  • Think about what your potential clients are tapping into their keyboard to find the service you offer.

I too would like to think that if I typed "Alan McMillan's lawns grass cutting service cumbernauld" I'd get noticed.

None of your potential clients know you. So think carefuly.

Infact ive just looked at your site to discover the Keywords you've used are as follows:

"Alan's McMillan's lawns is a grass cutting and garden maintenance service in
Cumbernauld, north lanarkshire for domestic homes and commercial premises." "Alan McMillan's Landscaping Services and odd jobs in Cumbernauld." Alans lawns in "Cumbernauld "provides a mowing service where the grass is always cut to perfection useing professional equipment. Keeping your your garden looking great and maintained with alan McMillan's lawns. "Alan McMillan's lawns, grass cutting service cumbernauld." "Alan's McMillan's lawns domestic grass cutting and mowing in Cumbernauld." "Alan McMillan lawn's grass cutting service in cumbernauld making beautiful looking lawns in Cumbernauld."">

Keywords are baiscally what somebody will enter into a search engine to find somebody like you.

Its also very worthwhile getting the TITLE of your website correct, this is also what the search engines look for.

Once you have done what the others have advised, using software on the net, Google analytics and others, pop your website on here for everyone to comment on and we can advise on your keywords, TITLE meta tags.

    What is your website address?

  • Only my opinion Alan but I wouldn't want to be associated with Vistaprint.
  • Looking at your source code should you not have a keyword Meta tag in there, within the head section at the top of the page?
Having keywords hidden on a web page i thought was a big no no as google bots will pick this up, and not in a good way!

Keywords are very frowned upon...by the search engine optimiser companies out there..you know the sort that email you ! 70% of my work was from the internet last year and all thanks to keywords ! Take a look on my website at www.thegardensurgery.com and scroll to the bottom of the page..and there is a space...right click the mouse over this area and you will see my bank of keywords...of course you can`t see them as they are the same colour as the background. This will give you a good idea of how keywords work and what they should be. There is nothing worse than visible keywords as i think that looks like you a desperate ! and visitors think what's the random txt about ! Only this year i have started getting visitors just using the words Garden makeover, don`t ask me why? All i know it works for me. steve
  • Too much to go into in terms of what you should do and where...but I'll throw this into the mix. If you want to maximise traffic and nail money terms.

You are looking at key phrases NOT keywords if you are going to take on competitive on the money categories.

An example here if you need a quick 101

    Hi Alan

It's worth bookmarking Google's Webmaster Tools SEO page as a goof reference point.

I would also read Google SEO .PDF - it's very clear.

It's worth bolting a few extra pages on to your site either as advice pages or as a blog. Based on what Richards says, you can include all of the right phrases within the text and it can be so much stronger than 'stuffing' keywords into templates (just make sure all pages are linked).

    Hope this helps?

    Phil
  • My advice is - Design your site for people not for search engines, - if you have the right words in your copy then the search engines will pick them up anyway. - Other than that the best thing for you is to ensure that your bio on here is as good as on your website, and contribute to these forums and others in your line of expertise. My name is fairly common, - if you put in my company name I come up top, but if you type in Claire Brown the first mention of me is contribution to this forum!

When writing copy, - don't we all over the internet, - count how many times you have written We, I and us, compared to you, your and yours - your website should be all about the benefits to your customer, not what you do.
When I started, I found a copywriter that wanted their garden looked after, and a photographer that wanted a planting design, - I got great website words and a professional photograph which made all the difference to the price I could charge.

having read your website, i'd recommend you read

Hi Alan, to be honest search engines don't assign much significance to key words these days (I'm refering to the meta tag keywords here, not keywords in the content). Search engines send out robotic spiders to index your site which focus more on content rather than the meta tag keywords in the html code. Also, the order of content is important, so your most important words/phrases should be at the top (spiders also assume that words on the left have more importance than words on the right of a page!!). There is also a limit to the amount of words that they look at before moving on; another reason to get the important stuff at the top of the page. Someone already mentioned that the Page Title is important, which it is, it's also used in Search engine descriptions when people do a search. Here's a list of what's important...
    1) Page Title (first thing to sort out)
    2) H1 Headings (followed by H2, H3 etc very important)
    3) Content (most important top left of page)
    4) Links to and from your site.
    5) Register with google search engine
    6) keyword meta tags (lots of SE's don't even use them any more)
FINALLY DO NOT ADD KEYWORDS TO YOUR CONTENT IN THE SAME COLOUR AS YOUR BACKGROUND AS YOU WILL GET BANNED FROM GOOGLE WHEN THE SPIDERS PICK IT UP !!!
    Cheers, Frank
