Italian style garden

I've been asked to design an Italian garden for a lady who hails from Calabria in the south of Italy.

The plot is not very big and athough it has a view of the sea you would ordinarily have to stand on a chair to see it over a 6' fence (cannot be reduced as the neighbour's dog keeps jumping over!)

So I'm looking for your essential elements and an idea of how to blend them in this very smal area.

There's an apricot tree that doesnt fruit at all but looks quite established. I am also looking for advice on pruning it!!

One last thing - the cat is buried in the garden and they want to keep the grave accessible

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!!

  • hi sounds good any chance of a raised area so the sea can be viewed whilst seated? without peering into the neighbours garden

Cut out the top foot or two of fence panels and replace with trellis.

A running water feature/pool. Mediterranean plants, lavender/ olive tree etc.

    Apricot-RHS pruning book.

Cat grave- some kind of edging, menbrane/cover with gravel. You could put some ornamental chain suspended round it.

    • maybe even a terracotta italianate statue of a cat, surrounded by a drift of nepeta, in memory of Tiddles

Yeah i was thinking terracotta, pale sand stone/marble statue's etc.

Stroke of genius-cat statue and cat mint-crack. 😂

        • Cheers Honey lol I planted an apricot tree in our orchard several years ago, I think one year we had 2 apricots on it, I think it's a weather related or pollination issue, pruning wise I think they are the same as a plum tree but could be wrong. Incidentally we ourselves have a cat buried at the foot of the apricot tree which seemed fitting as it had beautiful apricot coloured fur. My idea of the raised area to view the sea might not work if the client is elderly or due to space constraints obviously

I've never had the opportunity or privileged of pruning an apricot. Stone fruit same pruning as plum etc. Pollination by paint brush and cover with fleace when in flower to protect from frost. I didn't have a quick look on the RHS website honest!😳

            • pidgeons as well
