as a landscape student said to me at college (i was nursery stock at the time), 'i can buy a spade and a wheelbarrow and i'm in business' sounded like a sound bite from a lecturer to me.
does this fictional friend or employee have the skills and do they know what they are doing?
you have your contacts and sources of work - as long as they aren't poaching, i don't see the problem.
landscapers are constantly starting up and folding for one reason or another, and maybe it's someone you can team up with to everyones benefit - sharing leads, helping out and so forth
It happens, they come they go, some stick, some plod, some expand, boom and bust. In the end, if you are any good, don't over-price and are reliable you will be fine and should not worry about any kind of 'opposition'. With regards to an ex employee or friend 'poaching' your customers, a 'word in the ear' early on usually does the trick!
