Identify this tree?

I'm more of a lawn and plant man and not very good with tree's other than they are wooden :-) Okay Oak, Cherry and the like I can spot! :-)

Came across quite a few of these chaps this morning and was wondering if they are Ash? As most of the young saplings had dead leaves, I was wondering if it was Chalara dieback and hence must be reported.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • looks like a birch to me. i think ash leaves grow opposite each other and your photo looks like they are staggered/alternate..?

  • I think you could be right there Neil.

    Thanks

  • Yes it looks like the Black Birch (Betula Lenta) and these are one of the first trees to loose their leaves, which is why they look like they're dying or it could be that they have dryed out during the hot summer.
