I'm going back to school..

I've finally taken the steps and I'm going back to school (as such) I've signed up to do an Advanced diploma in Horticulture and also going to get those passes I never finished in GCSE English and Maths, spending out a fair amount on these so hoping all goes to plan over the next few years. Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Is it ever too late to go back to school ? Your views all welcome. Many thanks Harry

    Good for you.
Better man than me I could not find the time or have the inclination if I'm honest!
I can see the horticulture but not the maths and English if I'm honest! As you seem to be managing without!

Cheers guys, it's been a few years so hoping I've still got it, the GCSE's I'm doing because my grades were B's and C's, and there is a course I'm looking into ATM which have requirements of A's so need to redo them, it won't go to waste either way as my kids are going to start asking me questions soon that I won't be able to answer haha....:-)

Yep. ;-) that's my evening job, can't make ends meet just with rock n roll so decided to do a little gardening to help pay the bills... ;-)
  • My view many not be popular, but I think re-taking your GCSEs is a complete and utter waste of time and money.

Nobody is going to ask you what GCSEs you have, but an advanced diploma in horticulture may well let you command a higher hourly rate in the right circles. There'd be no point you pushing a mower if you were going down that route though.

What course could you be looking at taking that would require an A in maths and English? If you want to pay a good amount of money to take a course, they're got some nerve to demand that you have top notch GCSEs.

If it's self improvement you're looking for, then I can't knock you. But I should think you would get better satisfaction from learning an instrument or hitting the gym. An 'A' grade GCSE is nothing particularly special.

Myself, I don't have a qualification to my name. I know how to make money though. The value of qualifications, in particular those from a university, are grossly overstated by those who wish to sell them. As many of my friends who went to university have since discovered to their cost.

  • It's never too late, I went back to Uni at 30, although I didn't complete my studies. My partner has just completed her maths GCSE as she needs it do do teacher training, as she wants to advance herself further than her current teaching assistant role.

Life is a journey, good luck with your studies :)

I think is such a credible thing to do on so many levels, and I am sure it is not just about getting the grades. A focus of any sort away from the daily routine is really important, and when I have put myself under more pressure with time it makes me more efficient. I coach youth Rugby as an aside from work and took numerous courses which all fall at the busiest time of year for me. My level 2 was a full 8 hours on a Sunday that came after a 4 day show. Literally packed the final machines in the shop on the Saturday at midnight and was back in the classroom for 8 the next morning. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole learning experience. Just make sure you keep us updated on progress and good luck Harry

Harry, it's an admirable thing to do on many levels so go for it. It's not a sprint though, so be realistic on time committments from the outset and get the correct pace and rhythm to make sure that it all fits around everything else, work, family etc.

Harry, I think it shows a positive attitude to life if you're still up to learning and I suspect it will show through in your personal standing, family & business life. As Andrew mentioned, the balance has to right and only you get to call that shot.

I went back to college mid-life and it was an enjoyable experiences - being older I had the life experience to understand it's benefits and the mental capacity to take it in and absorb....

I'd love to go back and do a landscape or waste management degree.....
