How to manage invasive species

Hi all,

ELCA Vice-President and Ground Control National Training Manager Neil Huck recently went to Brussels to voice concern at the EU's proposal on managing invasive species.

The EU had opted to collectively tackle all invasive species across Europe via the use of a list containing the 50 most dangerous species.

Neil, speaking on behalf of ELCA, expressed his concern due to the uniquely varied environments these invaders can occur in. Instead, a regional approach was favoured by ELCA to evade the issue of varying locations and climates.

Invasive species are severely detrimental in terms of ecology and structural damage. What are your opinions on how to keep them at bay?

  • Andy, they were indeed introduced as ornamentals, for example the Japanese Knotweed. The predicament we are in today is, as you say, due to a lack of future planning when first introducing these plants, some of which can be dated back to 1825!
The issue is how to destroy the plants but also how to remove them on such a large scale, with invasive species an issue not only in the UK but across Europe.
Could an application of a list containing the top 50 most dangerous species be applicable to Europe as a whole, or do we require a more regional specific approach?

  • Indeed this was the point made by Ground Control National Training Manager and ELCA Vice-President, Neil Huck, when opposing to the EU's proposal of a European scale initiative. Each area would have a unique environment and so require tailor made site specific planning.
