How tall does Verbena bonariensis grow?

I have a Verbena bonariensis in my border. It's the plant's second season.

Last year it grew to about 4' tall but this year it's already reached 6' and I think it's still growing.

What's the tallest you've grown?

Mine's become quite woody this year. I think I'd be inclined to administer the Chelsea chop next year so that I have many more even flowering stems lower down. I looked at a few images yesterday and I think Verbena bonariensis would be much nicer as a soft lush carpet of growth (would be a great weed suppressant too).

I've got a few new plants coming on - can't work out whether they're root suckers of self-seeders.

BTW, if anyone wants to reproduce during the season, Verbena bonariensis takes well from cuttings. Take the top of a fresh stem leaving at least two facing sets of nodes (cut off the side shoots) to insert directly into soil or composts with at least 2-3 sets of leaves above the ground.

Keep moist. Will take in about 3 weeks, depending on the conditions.

  • Was it cut to the ground over winter? if so when? Mine were very slow to get going this year

No, I din't cut it back.

I think the mild winter was a major factor. In some regions they won't overwinter at all and are considered an annual.
