How often do you clean your machines / tools?

Just wondering how often everyone cleans their tools

I started a thread a month or so ago about a problem with a lawn mower not lifting the grass - Here

Since then I have clean the mowers everyday when they have been used and have noticed a big improvement in grass collection. Not really that unsurprising that they are now working better :)

I clean my mowers deck every day very quickly and a more thorough clean once a week. I have a steel deck mower and that is getting cleaned the most as we all know steel mowers have a habit of rotting!

Hand held tools i clean every fortnight especially hedge cutter blades and chainsaws. the hedge cutter regularly gets sprayed with WD40 .

  • I used to use WD40 but not really suitable as it rapidly disappears....... chain lubricant aerosol is a better bet...the solvent evaporated and leaves some thick grease between the blades. As for cleaning tools..... only clean the underneath of mowers when I've got the blade off for sharpening...... nothing else gets cleaned.

  • Tools are all given a quick blow after each job with the leaf blower, and if looking dirty at the end of the day washed off.

Every Friday afternoon they are all hosed down and left to dry (even my metal decked 21" snapper mower".

The mower deck was undercoated with primer paint in spring and will get another under coat for protection come this winter.

All blades / cutter bars are sharpened and then dipped in a bucket of engine oil then stood to drip dry over the weekend - wiped off with an old towel on Monday morning before loading the van....

Once it gets regular, the whole task takes ten to fifteen mins, as all tools are usually still sharp from the week before.

  • never use wd40 its a sure fire way to end up having to reapply everyday or risk rusting gt85 is a better spray lube as it leaves a thin coat of teflon

  • Just wondered what some people think about potential risk of spreading disease; fungus/bacterium from pruning tools or weeds from garden to garden by not giving a quick clean or often - guess most clients don't really care or think about it - one of the gardens I've started currently has ground elder and mares tail - I wouldnt want to be accused of spreading that around.

  • Not often enough !!

the mowers get scraped off when needed and when I have time they get pressure washed. Blades sharpened as and when required.

The Chainsaws I am a bit more particular about, they get a basic strip down and clean after a days work, It's also a good time to make checks on them. Especially when they are being used everyday.

Next year I'm going to try and get into a routine of cleaning everything the way others here are describing. I know I should be doing it!!
