Step 1 - Locate all services. Break up and remove the concrete, excavate the soil which is currently turf down 150mm or so, get a grab lorry to remove the waste. If using edging this will need to be dug out slightly deeper. You'll probably need a digger.
Step 2 - install concrete footings below the edging 100mm to 150mm thick. bed the edging of your choice either in/on this concrete before it setts or with mortar once set. Install 100mm -150mm MOT type 1 across the area to be driven on. Compact with a whacker or roller.
Step 3 - spread gravel at a depth of 35mm thick and compact again. Job done!
Thanks guys this is really helpful. im using sleepers for the edging will these need to be concreted in? and does the membrane go on top of the MOT type 1 or underneath?
thanks
Carly
membrain under type1 never under gravel, sleepers dont need to be be concreted in just set firm and leval possible staked at the back with wood or metal stakes MSH
definitely stake the sleepers. perhaps get a few bags of post mix just to anchor and support the sleepers and stakes. Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to supporting things such as vehicles.
Have you tried Coregravel?
no point wacking the gravel as it doesnt compact (no fines) use at least 150mm of type 1 stone. as for edgings wooden gravel boards are fine to use just set the tops to your finished level and use wooden stakes behind. If you want you can use a weed membrane/geotextile under the type 1 stone, most weeds will grow down into and not up through the stone
Only use type 1 stone the crushed concrete/crusher run stuff tends to have alot of soil in the "fines" and also occasionally has larger pieces of hardcore in making wacking with a plate not as effective.
dont put more than 50mm of gravel on top as becomes arkward to walk on and you will be re-raking ruts/tire marks every week
