when they phone me to come and mow the lawn , i might just bite the bullet and tell them :
ive got to charge £x's this year , otherwise its not worth it ...............
maybe just get to the point - dont be unconfident if they use you already and need you they will pay.
a lot of my jobs are on price ,so its easier that way . otherwise its a day rate or full quoted works. .
what's the increase. im at my desired price/hr now ,so if they want me there is no manouver - tough.
you get what you pay for. i usually put it up middle of summer , no-one minds as much then if they need you and i always give my best' price and get most jobs worth my while. (95%)
so im probably to cheap . or they know me, like me, trust me..............
Your letter hits the spot, will edit it a bit to suit. Thanks for your help.

something i have tended to do (which works for me )
is if i quote cheap (for me) , i can then be more flexible and fit it in when i want if another better job comes along.
regulars get a good rate and i sometimes take waste away in quote.
but on some last year as no price increase , i didnt do any edging (less time), weather so awful anyway they were happy i got it cut (i am reliable).
another i am strimming the roadside less (due to being nearly run-over by inches !)
90% i use green bin for cutting - always ask /or tell . i usually say IS IT ALRIGHT IF I PUT THIS IN YOUR GREEN BIN..? they know im reasonable and never say no now , so its one less trouble and 10 mins less taking it out of the corner of little trailer....
I think most people realise that costs do need to increase. It can look like you are being defensive if you list your reasons. But you know your customers - if it feels better to explain it in advance then go for it - there's been some great suggestions already.

Just a thought :)

Sixteen million workers, or more than half the UK's workforce, do not expect to get a pay increase this year, a survey suggests. However don't forget that our operating costs are and will continue to sky rocket so don't be too afraid to raise the prices where applicable.
