Honda powered Flymo....

We've had several dicussions about them, I have one and have been using it for the last 3 years, robust but flawed as the 4 stroke engine seems too heavey really for the purpose but it gives me a good work out....Now two good things about one (shock)1. mowing under trampolines & trees, you can fold the handle flat get on your knees and shove it around where no strimmer or other mower could go.2. When I mow some peoples verges etc I'll use the Fylmo, once cut I can return down the road/path with the Flymo and it will blow all the cuttings clean away.Oh and a bonus is it's soo simple there is next to nothing to go wrong, no drive, no wheels, no grass box etc Just a Honda engine bolted to a bit of plastic !!!So far from brilliant but not as crap as some might think..

  • Flymo's have never been crap. You forgot to add the ability to cut a near vertical bank with a Flymo & a piece of rope. Seriously funny though when someone thinks that a Flymo will hover over water & tries to use to cut reeds.
  • Is that something you have done??? I started with just a petrol flymo. It done me well for a little while.

  • We have two 446 flymos like you say
Embankments small areas don't have to get blower out LOL
would not be with out it ?? unless something lighter came on the market
  • To be honest it is a bit of kit I was seriously considering to deal with those very overgrown large gardens. The last two days I've spent striming & then mowing a rather large gdn. I actually spent more time clearing the grass box from my M5 than mowing. But I was wondering if a Flymo would have been quicker than my FS90?
  • Marc it does'nt do over grown very well at all..I wouldn't buy on for that.

  • I don't doubt your speed or versatility with the tools you have or am I suggesting that you rush out and buy one but some of the Hooooge trampolines in gardens (some of which can't be pulled aside) you couldn't get under with a anything else I doubt, holding the handle flat with one hand and the other shoving it to and fro I get under the whole area with no cuttings to clear ? It's also the only thing I use to clear under a large Walnut tree the branches cover the ground and the Flymo if I lift one branch at a time will get in there..but I can't ! Works well to mow close to the base of large Cordyline too a normal mower catches the end and shred them making it look bad, a strimmer just tangles I have in the past used a couple of forks to hold it all out the way and strim but the flymo float straight in there blows the leaves out the way so doesn't catch them and does a first class job.

I can do all the above with a strimmer/ clearing saw....... one less machine to carry and i'm faster
  • To be honest, wouldn't really have thought you could strim under a large trampoline but there again, if it can,t be moved, don't suppose the grass will grow much in the middle and you could probably just sweep across with the hedgecutter.

I'm sure I've heard of people using Flymos to cut hedges...... expect they're all dead now!!

  • I bought a Flymo XL 500 the begining of this season for a new client with a very sloping garden.
They promptly moved 2 months later!!!
Must admit the honda engine does look big but once fired up I admit to liking it.
Good for garden clearances etc. Strim and then go over it again with the flymo.
  • I use an Echo SRM 5000 about as powerful as you can get, great machine.
Still find uses for the flymo though.

You want a more powerfull strimmer/clearing saw a 40 cc machine like FS400, FS450 or The husqy 345RX (what I use) will eat up the grass no matter how long.

  • i run 3x hayter ranger 53 pro and about 6x weeks age bought a flymo xl500 and its crap now up for sale on ebay
dont wast your time , my customer like to see lines and no clippings ,my hayter will cope with slopes just hang on and get dragged side to side or get the strimmers out ,as for trampolines pick it up and move it
