Home-made garden (or kitchen) chairs

I've just made a protype garden chair (although I'm also going to make 8 of them for my dining room too).

This chair took about 6 hours to make and 3 hours was rubbing down and sanding. Still a little more to go.

Going to stain and then treat with linseed oil.

The design isn't mine. I followed this Youtube video:

You'll note that I don't have the same overhang at the front of the seat. This is because I didn't allow for cutting the curve at the front and back of the seat.

    Thanks Ben:)

Next is to make 8 of these to use as dining chairs. I'll use a hardwood next time though. Then I'll make a dining table in the same style.

    Thanks Axel.

I just used the cheapest of the cheap pine from the local builders merchant. As this is/was the first chair, I didn't want to risk wasting expensive wood until I was confident that I could complete the job satisfactorily.

Just doing this first one has already given me ideas for streamlining and efficiently speeding up the process.

I will post pictures up when I've finished (although this might be in a couple of months or so).

BTW these are quite easy to make.

If in the future you have to cut down a tree or remove a stack of old wood from a client's garden, why not suggest making them a chair (or chairs) from the wood, instead of burning or dumping the wood?

  • They look good Phil!! Comfy?
  • Awesome! well played.
