Holiday Cover

Hi,We are going away for two weeks in August, which will leave my regular weekly/fortnightly customers without a gardener as currently I am on my own.Has anyone had experience hiring someone for two weeks cover? I suppose there may be future work if I found someone quite flexible with the odd job here and there. Or has anyone advice on what I should do?Many thanksRuss

  • Depending on how many jobs you have and usual frequency of visits you may find if you get all of them up to date just before you go away then they will last until you get back, unless there is watering involved etc..How I miss the good old days when the lawns turned brown in July/August and didn't need cutting for weeks lol

    • Your last sentance reminds me of that great summer of 1976...geez forty years ago..I must be old
      • Those were really hot summers. :-)
  • Stating the obvious here Russ, but why take two weeks off in August with no cover?  A week would be no problem garden-wise and would give you minimal stress picking up the pieces.

Winter is the time for a two week jolly, when your earning power is low and prices are usually good as well.  Two weeks of 'winter sun' would do you more good anyway.

    • Hi Colin.

Good question! I've only been running my business full time since Novemeber last year and we had already booked the holiday!l before then so didn't know my circumstances!
But will take note for future ref!
      Cheers
      Russ
      • OK Russ, I'll let you off this time!!

In that case, I'd probably explain to everyone exactly that, no bullsh*t, if they like you and want to keep you, the customers will be sympathetic.  Keep your fingers crossed it is dry and the grass and weeds don't grow too much, remembering that if you are away for two weeks, it will be 3 weeks between garden visits.

        • 3 weeks between visits is going ot be manageable. All of my work is fortnightly, and I've booked a week off so they're all being pushed back a week for a 3-week gap. However, if I took a 2 week holiday that gap would be 4 weeks which is definitely too much!

    • Yep, my thoughts too. Last night i booked out holiday to Tenerife for January 2017. This suits us at the minute as both our boys are still under school age but i'm unsure what will happen when they do start school.

  • yeah maybe better to come back and deal with the ravages of mother nature than pick up the pieces from the temporary gardener who has "done it wrong" and upset the customers, you can soon catch up and will have plenty to go at on your return

  • I am going away too for nearly two weeks. I will work my backside off to get everything done and dusted and then will do the same the week I am back. This is a one off as we usually go away only in winter but its another Reunion and drinks up. So I am hoping for a really good dry spell, especially regarding the lawns. It just cannot keep going like its now, rain, rain and more rain.

To answer your question: No I would not bother trying to find someone. Not for two weeks. They may also undercut you and take your customers.
