Henchman Platform Ladder....not impressed!

Today I collected my first Henchman platform (junior with extension). I also have a larger Hedgemaster Platform which is fantastic.

The Henchman has support bars which need screwing together with wingnuts each time you open and can't be closed up without removing them again. Seems a real faff and not conducive to fast working pace and moving around gardens/sites easily.

I thought Henchman was "THE PLATFORM" to buy, am I missing something?!

  • I used mine today. As I'm on my own, it is a pain, but the stability and safety are worth 10 minutes assembly and breaking it down on a large job.

The only time it's a real pain is if you need to go through a gate. That's ridiculous, but the width is what makes it safe, I guess?

Talking of ladders has anyone seen or used the Faxko Tripod Ladders?

  • My older platform ladders seem more stable and fold in half making them easy to move around and load in/out the van.

If anyone is interested I'd buy Hedgemaster over Henchman!

Geoffrey - not a fan of tripod ladders myself I always like to cut from the top of my platform adjusting feet accordingly, Not sure I'd be comfortable stretching out off a tripod ladder in the same way as I do off a platform.

  • Interesting. I got my Henchman for about £200: like new, but it's the steel one. Very solid, but heavy. And, a folding option would be nice.

How does the Hedgemaster fold? I'm always worried that 14 stone moving around, 10 feet in the air, is not ideal for a folding mechanism!

I hate hedge cutting from ladders. You have a tiny contact point with the ladder (and the ladder with the ground), and are leaning in all directions. One fall is all it takes.

I just factor in a cost for the platform, in time and transport. £20 on a large hedge job (it's ten minutes max to set it up) seems not to cause a problem.

  • We use a tripod. Very light, maneuverable and stable, I like the way you can put the front leg into a hedge to get close up. Obviously there is no platform, but there are pluses and minuses for both systems.

So will have to rethink @ look at hedgemaster ,or other
What's our discount for henchmen? Thanks
  • I think the Henchman discount is 10%, we now use two of the hedgemaster platforms and use a 14ft tripod which is ideal for tall hedges and small trees. I'm on the look out for a 6/8ft tripod secondhand to keep in the van for regular maintenance rounds.
