Hedge wars! BBC

Did anyone see hedge wars, shown last night? I just saw it on iplayer. Made me smile :)

These trees become such a permanent feature when they are planted - has anyone tried to remove one of these larger specimens completely?

I wouldn't ever see one in my garden either, I think they look horrid compared to some less intense trees around the country.

  • I did several x 2 (14) years ago in a garden where come the colder months and there wasn't so much else for me to do the fellow came out on a weekend and cut one or two down and I took the stumps out during the week. They're actually not that difficult to dig out as they don't have a tap root – dig a trench around - severing the big thighs and then go underneath - he'd got a sweet chestnut wood at the bottom of his garden and in a clearing once a year we had one big fire – after a couple of years the surrounding chestnut trees sent down the biggest nuts I've ever seen.

I've been round to get photographic evidence :-) I know that stump grinders are the thing now but really, has nobody else took these out? – the trees I dug out in this garden were 30 foot or so – not actually sure they were leylandii, some had got boughs bending low but none had a tap root.. he had them in two lines, maybe 12 foot apart down each side of the front garden and some round the back - they're not there anymore so I won't bother with that photo - this one at the back is the only one left and is maybe 40 ft. now. He tells me that for the last two at the front he hired a tifor – he was keen – he cut his own grass at weekends but he lost his job so I lost mine :( it was two days a week year round and they were the only folk to ever give me a pay rise without me asking.

I've noticed this while driving past over the years and it was mentioned in a thread some time back – if you cut a conifer hedge right back to the trunks how long will it take for it to green up coming through from the other side – this is a short run of hedge belonging to this chaps neighbour and he cut it back to the trunks about ten years ago (best photo I got, sorry)
