    • Thats great yeah i would probably offer trimming lowering and removing to increase work possibilities
  • I'd think you'd fall right in between both ends of the market, and lose out from both sides.

My hedge work is quite profitable, as a small business, so I don't farm it out to other companies. The really large jobs fit really well for my tree surgeons, who make good money from them.

I can't see many sites who already have a garden service needing a separate hedge service? Perhaps some people need hedges only, but then they are bombarded with flyers every day offering tree/hedge cutting. A hard market to compete in, and as already said it's limiting your work to all the clients wanting the work in the same few weeks each year?

  • and don't forget about the bird nesting season it will restrict certain hedge work

There's one guy round here that only does hedges and topiary cutting but he has to travel miles. Seems to be doing ok. But he's been going 25 years so has plenty of clients.

Maybe if you could sell yourself as a Topiary specalist to the big Estates etc. But most gardener maintenance companies do hedges anyway and to a very good standard so really I can#t see the market for just hedges as there is already a lot around.

  • I would say in the past ,over some years ,that 50% of our work was hedges. So we put on flyers. Hedging specialists.
Inc. Reductions, lowering/ cutting, trimming , removal & planting.
I have 7 to do ATM.
We do small/ med trees also .
Large hedges are now hard , long work if tall as I'm 41. I'm looking at a henchman type to make things safer today.

I cut hedges as part and parcel of the package. Also have several to do out side the normal contracts. V.seasonal, expensive inital outlay - cutters, ladders etc and you'll need specfic liability insurance that allows you to work over 3 metres. May even need to do a ladder course dependant on insurance company.

I personally dont think there is a market or sustainable business for hedge cutting alone but add in fruit tree pruning and basic paddock grass cutting and you may well have a winner.

    Either way good luck
  • I reckon hedgecutting all day, every day, would become very tedious and exhausting.... one of the "pleasures" of garden maintenance I find is a bit of variety.

    • It would be almost impossible, the drain & muscle ache received requires much total rest, I've had tennis elbow for 11mths too . hedges contributed to that ..... Mowing is a great opposite.
      • Totally agree with Geoff, why would you want to ?
