  • any photos or address so we can check google street view?

  • no photos i cut them about 3 years ago i think they took me about 2 hard days to cut and tidy up i been looking for the invoice . i not done it since because they reckon i was to expensive but got a call last week asking me to go back and take over the garden work again as the other people are failing to keep up with the work

  • hard to say without seeing it, 2 days for you might by 1 day for me, or 4 days for some £10 an hour chap with a black and decker hedge trimmer. I would advise you either charge the same or more than the last time you did it but definatley not less.

  • as chris says, hard to say without seeing it, but if it hasnt been cut for a couple of years i would guess its a bit out grown, i would charge between £500-£700 for aproximately 160 metres, both sides and top

  • Depends on the ground either side.

The way I see it 3m is c10' high.  I'd cut to 8-10' from the ground with a long 30" HS86. (I am 6'2") Anything not done can be reached from the steps as you cut the top.  100m to trim really wouldn't take me an hour to do the sides, if however they needed cutting back could take ages!  All depends on how much growth there is.  The main time issue is cutting the top, as you probably realise.  4.5' wide is ok though as that can be done from the one side and just an edge tidy on the other side.

Cost wise needs to be your rate and how long it would take you to cut it.  It's not inconceivable that it could take you 50% longer than last time due to extra growth in 2yrs.

  • well it in the fens  so the site is flat it is about 4/5 arce smallholding and the hedges divide the plot in to garden orchard and lawn area and some boundary hedges last time,i went i was on my own . and had to barrow waste to far side of site

  • Roy you can check your online bank account to see how much the job was last time surely?

  • As said, its impossible to price without seeing the job but  £500 + sounds a bit steep to me. Would you be willing to pay it ?

Its much better to get a pal in to help you on a ball ache job if you normally work on your own so you don't get bogged down in it. The extra muscle and moral support is invaluable.

So as a (very) rough guide if it takes one long hard day for two gardeners then its £350. That equates to £200 for you, £100 - £130 for the helper and the remainder for fuel/ wear and tear on the hedge cutter as these kind of jobs really knock the pudding out of blades and gearboxes.

The weak point in my version of how the job should go is that it is critically important it is completed in one day.  There is no shame in bottling out and just giving them a day rate for your labour but you would then stand to only make a basic wage out of it.

Hope this helps, could be considered a load of c**p. Who knows ?

  • the reason i said between £500-£700 would be worst case, if the hedge is so over grown and and it needs branches cut out and lowered a lot rather than just trimming back, you have also have to consider the couple of loads of green waste there will be to take away

Roy you've done this job before, youv'e seen it and worked it. Youv'e invoiced. I cant understand why your asking for advice on pricing when none on ljn apart from yourself has seen the job !!!
I'm not being dis-respectfull of you on this, but cant see the point. There has been numerous posting explaining, why you should not ask, "how much do I charge for". It all comes down to your business charges and costs, not anybody elses.
