hedge planting

Evening all can any one guide me on how to price up plant 50m of bare root blackthorn/hawthorn canes and tree guards. planted in a "V" formation quite close together.

As part of the job I have suggested getting a digger in to dig a trench as there is abot 6inches of topsoil dumped on top of hardcore as it was an old farm yard.
and back fill with descent topsoil.
Also to provide bark and a membrane strip. Is this a bit over the top for a hedge.
Im worried I wont get it as its one of my maintenance round, which is a large house/flat complex, and Im pretty sure other contractors pricing wont know whats below the soil or even care! any tips would be appreciated.

Hi,50m of whip planting is a couple of hours work in normal planting schemes. depends what your customer is specifying. do they know the conditions the hedge will be getting planted into ie, the hard core sub base ?. i would cover all options, first one being as you have said re the trench and the other planting in to what is the existing terra firma. quote both, the chances are they will go for the cheapest spec anyway but it shows you are being professional in drawing it to their attention and covers you if the planting fails.also bare in mind bare root season is november to march otherwise its potted plants they may need you to plant and they are dearer to buy.
  • i cant see blackthorn/hawthorn whips appreciating the membrane and bark treatment too much! seems a bit too civilised a treatment for such bumpkin planting and most prunus species do like a good drink now and then..hawthorn might fair a little better in those conditions. i would sub the work out to some seasonal tree/hedge planters..though even they dont seem to work outside of that dormant winter
    window.

  • As Brian says, give the customer 2 options, I would add a 50m length of leaky hose with a hose connector(especially if the hardcore remains) then mulch with 75mm wood chip. As it is one of your existing contracts, you can simply 'plug in' a hose and give the hedge a good start. Once established it will cope well on its own.
