hedge cutter care

Hi just wondering what products people use on the hedge cutter blades after a use, currently use wd40 but thinking there is probably something better as it does not really hold? Recommendations much appreciated. Thanks

    Hi Bob

You need something thicker than WD40.

years ago we used to use old engine oil but it wasn't the most earth friendly.
A thick vegetable oil is a better option as it's natural.

I like mine to be quite dry so stuff doesn't stick!! A good high temp grease in the grease holes and a spray of wd, or similar to clean a dispel moisture is all we ever do. Sharpen weekly with a flat file and all is good!!
  • old engin oil with a paint brush before you put it to bed for the night
  • Hi like the sound of the vegetable oil, cheap and clean, would you still use wd40 after a wet day of cutting just to aid with any moisture. Or just give a wipe off? How often do you tend to sharpen can never get it like when there new, what is the best tool, for sharpening?

I use a flat chainsaw file!! Works well and is easy. Do it regularly!!!
  • I use this mixed with a splosh of whatever oil you prefer...I keep it in a trigger spray bottle and apply whenever necassary ;-)

I too use a flat chainsaw file it's fine enough to sharpen and small enough to get between the teeth well..I tend to sharpen more infrequently but have the blades out G clamped to the bench, then do the whole regrease gearbox etc

    Cheers
