Several points that spring to mind;
There are regulations (which are somewhat confusing) about the amount of fuel you can carry in spare fuel cans in your vehicle without it being Bonded.
There are local licensing regs about how much you can fill up into cans at petrol stations.
There are regs about what type of Containers can be used.
When transporting pesticides, best practices states you should use a bunded container which effects what you need to display. The bund should be able to contain the amount of product you have in case of a leak
If you carry fuel in cans, they need to be secured or you are likely not to be insured in event of accident (ie fuel can bounces around and then 'explodes')
If you carry 'dangerous' products for use in your business, those products will have Stat. Use labels which tell you about control measures and any signage needed and contact numbers to be displayed in event of a spill or accident.
I think if you transport goods for hire or reward, (ie trying to transport petrol wholesale) then it opens up a whole new world of reg & red tape.

For simple Hazchem Van signage try eBay or somewhere like Safetyshop.com :http://www.safetyshop.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=hazchem
