Hard landscaping, other peoples trades.

I have just spent the week on a brick laying course. To give me a better understanding of what is required.

It started with the basic types, size, bricks, blocks etc

We covered walls, retaining walls, garden walls, damp courses for houses and concrete for paths.

It was a full week of hands on and very enjoyable. Now I know brick layers probably spend at least three years learning their craft and I dont want to step on anyones toes, but I really enjoyed it and I was really surprised at my final efforts.

I ended up building a wall with an arch (albiet on a small scale) but it has given me a greater understanding of whats involved with other peoples trades.

Also built a small fire place too.

Has anyone tried other peoples trades to get an insight to what the task might or might not involve?

  • Always wanted to do a brick laying course - Amazed at what you built considering it was a one weeks course.
  • I did a similar course a few yrs ago. I find it very handy just to build mowing strips, lawn edges etc plus it saves a few £. Good pics though plus it adds an extra bow
  • PRO
time served as a joiner but skilled at many trades to a very high standard, was lucky to be around in the 70's when there was a lot of good tradesmen around and by watching the good guys and asking questions I picked it up

    general joinery
    shopfitting
    brickwork
    roofing
    floor tiling
    plumbing
    painting and decorating
    plastering
    all aspects of groundwork

the only trade i will not touch is electrical

  • I'm a time served electrician, but decided to change 20 years ago due to the fact that most of the work was contract work, and I was out of work a lot, also qualified in health and safety.
  • i did two year evening course ,got fully qualified bricklayer cscs
yes it is good to learn all the basics in a class room enviromen twith all things to course and gauge
but out side starting from scratch it is a different ball game, this is where you really learn
  • I would love to learn how to lay bricks/know how my plumbing works/fix my car. Having been to an all girls school, they were a bit short on the practical skills, and I feel I really missed an opportunity, as I have always been a bit of a tomboy and pretty good with my hands - my dad built half our house when I was a teenager, and I used to help him out a bit. I also think that as a garden designer it is really important to understand how the garden will be put together - no point in designing something that is impossible to build!
One thing I really want to know is how my lawn mower works - I can do simple stuff like changing blades etc, but having spend over £100 on servicing it recently, I KNOW that if someone were to show me how I could have done it myself! I am great at taking things apart, just less good at putting it back together again!!
