Hand-held sprayers

Hi guys,

Any advice for a decent hand-held sprayer? 5 or 7 litre, only used for Roundup.

I bought a Matabi last year, and it's the worst piece of rubbish I've ever wasted money on. Cheap, hard plastic threads that don't hold at all, and you spend more time spraying from the joints than from the nozzle!

I used to use the basic Hozelock ones, but the thin alloy lance doesn't stand up to being rattled around in a van all day, and spares are almost as much as buying a new one.

Is there anything with a decent-quality lance that will not fall apart? Or am I better off buying a cheap one from my local supplier, £15 or so, and throwing it away when it breaks?

  • Screwfix 7 litre is only £10, and i have had no problems with it.

  • That's the dilemma!

£70 for one, or buy 7 at £10 each and treat them as disposable.

Apart from the Matabi, where every part of it is horrible, I've only ever had a problem with the lances. Are the CP ones really that tough, or cheap to replace?

I have the older version of one of these - pretty indestructible - sits in the rack with my other two Cooper Pegler knapsacks (CP2000 and CP3).

In the last few years it has needed a pressure valve and that's only after something fell on it in the van and broke it.

  • I've used the same cooper pegler sprayer for 5/6 years now, its been beat to hell in the back of the van. I've had to spend a fiver replacing a broke nozzle and that's it. Think it cost over 100 but well worth it.

  • I've had both CP and Screwfix..... bought CP first and wasn't impressed with the quality of parts for the price, as such bought a Screwfix £10 job, leaked more than it sprayed!

I'd recommend Hoselock sprayer, cheap enough to replace as and when you snap the lance or it gets broken but good enough quality for day to day use. Good pressure even when low on liquid.

  • Ive used the CP sprayer i posted a link to for the last 4 yrs it gets loads of abuse and has been faultless.
  • I'll also back the CP ones..... I've kept a CP5 and a CP8 in the van passenger footwell for years and they're always getting abused but still going strong. Plastic lances but haven't broken one yet.

  • i also brought a Matabi cos i thought they was meant to be really good, there really rubbish, mine leaks now the straps broke and ive barley used it. Im back to my cheap one that actually sprays without leaking!

  • Gone for a Hozelock, as the Pitchcare link was out of stock for the CP ones and I can get next-day delivery on Amazon.

Don't know why I ever bought the Matabi one. I think it was recommended here, but it's worth avoiding...

I've used the Hozelock ones for years. The only issue is the alloy lance bending and failing. Spares are almost the cost of a new one, so I have a collection of perfect sprayers with broken lances!
