Half-price camellias and blueberries

A UK camellia nursery is having to sell stock following major snow damage to its growing structures to make room for repairs to take place.

This means gardeners will be able to buy large camellias and some blueberries for half their normal price including some spectacular specimen plants that would normally retail for £150.

Dorset’s Trehane nursery will start selling off these plants from Easter Saturday, 30 March and expects a busy Easter weekend with personal shoppers keen to stock their gardens in time for the spring.

Structural damage caused by heavy snow earlier in the year will create a great buying opportunity for gardeners looking for instant shape and colour this spring.

The snow, quite literally, ‘brought the roof down’ on two of the major growing structures at Wimborne’s Trehane nursery. Known internationally for its comprehensive range of stunning flowering camellias as well as its blueberry plantation, the nursery now has to implement a major repair programme with access only possible by selling off a lot of its larger plants.

For gardeners this means many healthy, large plants will be available at half their normal retail price.

“In many ways we were lucky,” said David Trehane. “The timbers fell mainly over walkways, sparing most of the plants. Some have a few broken branches, but they are all healthy and will soon grow back. We do have to move on a lot of larger plants though – and in many more varieties than we would normally plan to sell now. Some of these larger plants are 15 years old and really tall. They’ll make an instant impact in any garden.”

With hundreds of camellias and some large blueberry plants available, in sizes ranging from 2 litre right up to 50 litre pots, Trehane’s ‘snow sale’ will start on Easter Saturday, 30 March and run until the end of April – stock permitting. During the sale the nursery will open Monday to Friday from 8.30am – 4.30pm and at weekends from 10am – 4pm.
