GROUND ELDER!!!!! aaaaagggghhhhhh

I have just taken on a new garden that has a ground elder problem (Major) that the last gardener had not by the looks of it touched for some time if at all. The problem i have is that not only is it in the bottom of the hedge it is also spreading into the lawn, although the lawn is far from perfect getting ground elder into it will truly distroy it.Do any of you guys no the best killer to use on this most evil of weeds?????

    Is Verdone still available? Tried to get some at our local garden centre but they dont stock it any more.
