Greasing machines

Morning all,I've come to the point again where I need to lubricate the gearing and blades in my machines and wonder if everyone else uses just standard grease from a 40Ltr drum or do you go for the manufacturer recommended stuff?

I just use bog standard high temp lithium grease for most of things

Me too, I would not buy a huge drum though it will last you 50 years! And get you covered in the stuff as well, I buy the cartridges for a grease gun and just slide them in.
You may have loads more gear than me but mine last about 1 year and it costs about £10 I think cant remember really it is nearly a year since I bought the last one.
Only use special stuff if manual gives a specific grade
  • Hi Tom,

There are usually certain working parts that have specific grease points and requirements which we always recommend keeping on top of to ensure things like gears don’t fail. This is usually general brown multi purpose grease.  We would also on certain machines recommend spraying white grease on the cutting parts of mowers and scythe especially after they have been cleaned to prevent rust and to help them work. Lastly we would also suggest using a “proprietary water based dispersant” such WD40 or GT84 on the inside of mower and scarifiers chassis as this helps prevent the build up of grass on the metal components.

    Hope this helps.

i would still check the recomended grease spec just in case to makes sure you don't need some high temp or waterproof grease etc for special sections of the tools,

you have to think why the manufacturer has specified that grease as they do with oils etc, its nothing to do with money its the fact that the testing done showed xxxxxxxx grease was best and gave the machine's wear parts a longer life

my most hated hated saying in the world is when i hear people say any oil is better than no oil because in truth if you put the wrong oil in an engine / transmission you could do even more damage and grease in some case's is the same so always double check
