Gravel driveway

I've been asked to arrange having my clients 300 square metre gravel driveway topped up with gravel. Not something I've done before. Does anyone know what sort of depth of gravel I should aim for? It'll be 5mm sized gravel.

Will I also want a whacker plate to whack it down before or after it goes down?

Any advice appreciated!

Should also point out the current gravel is not on any hardcore at all.

What gravel is it, small round pea gravel or crushed stone?

    5 mm seems small.

Small round pea gravel. Not my choice, clients.

if its just top up the gravel that is there all you need is shovels, barrows and cheap labour, finishing off with a gravel rake. It sounds as if you are using pea gravel (the sort that clags into your boot treads in the winter?)

As ffor depth... how deep with the edging let you go???

No edging just goes to grass!

  • I wouldn't go too deep with it, the vehicles will be 'swimming' through & leaving deep ruts. Plus traction will be poor.

      Yeah thats what concerns me

  • I would never use any ‘round’ gravel, such as pea gravel, on a drive. I would always use ‘square’ gravel. The round stuff never compacts and wheels will sink into it rather than firm it up in use.

Someone I know once used the larger round gravel and when the car drove onto it, it parted the gravel and the car sank into it.

I have just done my own hard standing around the new extension on my property with 5mm granite.

Agree - ideally want angular or crushed gravel. Stops  gravel being spread and wheel spinning. Compacting has no affect on shingle type material.

    • Only downside can be -  and I'm sure this is very rare- we used to have a driveway with golden gravel and a sharp piece got wedged between the tyre tread of my wife's RAV4 and punctured it. The chap at the garage said it's uncommon but he had seen it before.
