Fuel coming through Stihl air filter

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else has had an issue with fuel coming through their air filter when starting Sthil KM? Or perhaps with a strimmer or hedge cutter?

When I go to start it from cold I do the usual things you would to start it but it never starts and when you take the air filter off it is soaked in fuel. If I start it without the air filter on and run it for a minute and then put a dry air filter back in it will run but not idle like it should and then cuts out. If you leave it for more than 5 mins and try to start it again I end up getting the same problems from starting it cold.

I have changed the spark plug several times, constantly have to dry air filters and swap them around, have even brought and replaced the carburettor on the advice of my maintenance guy, who doesn't know what else is causing the problem.

Any advice would be great, thanks all

Richard

Is the breather pipe working properly?
I'm surprised it starts at all like that.
Has the carb been setup properly?
It's sounds like it's getting far too much fuel to me. Is the plug black?
The choke is off isn't it?

Could the fuel tank be pressurised or could the unit be tranported accidently on its side or upside down ?

  • it could be dirt in the fuel tank that has got into the carb did you clean it out before fitting the new carb I have a blower that was doing similar petrol coming out of the exhaust even when I tried to start it . another thing to check is the gauze on the exhaust is not carbon up or the exhaust it self

    • I've an FS130 strimmer and if it's left on its side with the carb facing down, the same thing happens. Apparently a "normal" thing with this model and you just make sure you leave it upright. Very irritating though when it happens.

I have a km130 and if you leave it for any length of time other than horizontal fuel will escape the exhaust or from carb. It is quite a pain sometimes
  • I'd echo Geoff's comments...if left on it's side the air filter needs drying before it will start. Before going to the trouble of this it's worth trying switching it off, choke off and give it ten pulls, then switch it on and give it a pull, no choke. Sometimes I find this clears it and saves the hassle of going to get tools etc.

I have had this happen with my KM130, it seems it was the little valve that pushes into the top of the tank where the pipes go in. It was a pain to get out and the guy pretty much wrecked it getting it out but he popped a new one in and it has been ok since. Prior to this, he had had it in for repair 3 times and couldn't work out what was happening!

  • Thanks for the advice guys, its always kept flat in the van as it should be as it has its own shelf with the attachments. I will have a look into your suggestions and let you know if I have any success
