Part of a large grass cutting contract I am tendering for requires the following,
Application of autumn/winter fertilizer
Application of selective herbicide to pitch
Application of spring/summer fertiliser
Mark out pitch at start of season
Mark out pitch prior to game - frequency dependant optimum 34 times
Mow lines prior to marking – frequency dependent optimum 10 times
Remove and paint goal posts at end of season.
Spike pitch during season
Scarify and seed worn areas during the season
Scarify and seed all of the football pitch at the end of season
Application of herbicide to perimeters of all areas and around obstacles
Erect football goal posts – start of season
I have never marked out a football pitch before although given how often it is done it is only a case of going over the lines which are already there.
Have you any ideas on pricing or time needed for marking out and the cost of fertilizers/selective herbicides etc. for a pitch which is about 1.5 acres.
It there anyone in north Derbyshire who would want to do some of this for me?

Hi Vic575
We can mark out a pitch (I presume 11-a-side football), in 1.5/2hrs (2men). If the corners are already established then 1.5hrs or just under. I hope that helps.
Hi Alan,
Do mean that you still need to use string lines and measures to some extent in that one and a half hours? Or do you mean that you are just going over existing lines and it takes this long? How much should the charge be for doing this? I was thinking for the quicker non initial visits about £50 or £60. How does that sound? Bearing in mind it is a Council contract and not a cash strapped local team.
I spoke to someone this morning who does pitch marking and he had just done the local pitch. The lines were already established so no measuring or strings and it took him 45 minutes.
He said he uses the lime powder, not the ready to use stuff. What do you use?
Do you do the spiking and fertilizing etc. also?
Yes, that’s using a string line, measuring wheel etc. We overmark in about 30minutes for 1 man; far quicker.
Not too sure what we charge per pitch as it’s part of an overall maintenance contract. I think it’s only about £30-ish
We use a chalk based paint, with spray markers. We may be going from concentrate to ready mix but that’s still to be decided.
We slit but don’t fertilise
I have just been calculating costs to over seed, fertilize [autumn and spring – so twice] and line mark a football pitch. I have used the Amenity Land Solutions website to put together a bulk order to keep delivery costs very low.
I have used a website calculator for the amount of grass seed needed to over seed which is only 35g per m2 and it comes out at 210 kilos [6000m2 pitch] and I have added to this to allow for patching goal mouths etc. and for perhaps slightly putting a little more on.
For all the grass seed, two lots of fertilizer and ten 25kg bags of ‘Fleet superwhite’ the cost is £1614 inc vat and delivery [delivery is only £44]. Then there is the labour charge on top, so not cheap at all.
Even at the £30 per visit for line marking that you mention and 34 required visits that is £1020. Then the labour to apply the grass seed and fertilizer.
