Equipment Help

Hi,I've approximately 1 acre of grassed area clear of long grass, brambles, nettles and other long weeds. My Etesia mowers & Kubota sit on won't cope. I've tried looking for a self propelled flail mower for hire but cannot find any. I've got a PTO drive flail but recently sold the compact tractor as it was aging, also looked at compact tractor hire. Can anyone advise on suitable hire equipment, or what is your method for a good job?

  • Yes, i did look at them but wasn't too sure as they were only 2-3HP have you used these for this type of work and recommend them? Anything to watch out for?

    • I had a client with the flail version, used for a one-acre site a couple of times a year. Went through like a dream and mulched it up pretty well.

The scythe looks like a lot of clearing up afterwards?

How long is the grass ? HSS in Commerce Street do a power scythe we hired from them before, other option is out front mower.
    • What did you use sythe for? Did you find it useful?

    Machine wise, I'd look for (in order);

    1- a JD/Kubota with an outfront flail

    2- a Pedestrian BCS flail

3- an ATM (Etesia AV Ride-on/equalivant or a DR Scout)

    4- Powered Scythe

5- Cowhorn brushcutter with blade or scrub masher blade

    6 - ?

Options 1 - 3 will leave you with a better 'mulched' finish

Options 4 - 5 Not so good for saplings or brambles etc. Will leave you with more to tidy up & making good

More's the issue is what you can get hold off locally. Have you tried SGM Hire ?

Our prefernce is to hire in a Etesia or equalivant for large jobs although we have  DR Scout ATM ourselves which is great for small to medium areas

  • Grass/weeds around 4-5ft, hasn't been cut in 2 years.

Speak to Angus Chainsaws, they may have an Attila for demo , best option would be to strim with a blade to a level then go over with mower, we have an outfront that we use for this type of work but grass is about 2 foot, we leave the blades at highest level & cut down then go over again. Failing that is it near a farm , speak to farmer if he has a topper.
  • Ride on brushcutter like a grillo or etesia

What type of Kubota do you have we have F 1900 if PTO will fit this we can work something out.
  • My Kubota is a GR2120.
I've been offered a Iseki SRA800 rideon brushcutter from Inverurie Garden Centre which seems to fit the bill nicely and looks a powerful piece of kit. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MdWX9wl8tTE
