I had a client with the flail version, used for a one-acre site a couple of times a year. Went through like a dream and mulched it up pretty well.
The scythe looks like a lot of clearing up afterwards?
Machine wise, I'd look for (in order);
1- a JD/Kubota with an outfront flail
2- a Pedestrian BCS flail
3- an ATM (Etesia AV Ride-on/equalivant or a DR Scout)
4- Powered Scythe
5- Cowhorn brushcutter with blade or scrub masher blade
6 - ?
Options 1 - 3 will leave you with a better 'mulched' finish
Options 4 - 5 Not so good for saplings or brambles etc. Will leave you with more to tidy up & making good
More's the issue is what you can get hold off locally. Have you tried SGM Hire ?
Our prefernce is to hire in a Etesia or equalivant for large jobs although we have DR Scout ATM ourselves which is great for small to medium areas
I've been offered a Iseki SRA800 rideon brushcutter from Inverurie Garden Centre which seems to fit the bill nicely and looks a powerful piece of kit. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MdWX9wl8tTE
