  • I have the 501.. if you have Work enough for it then its a far better buy than the 401.For me the 401 is way too small. But if your only doing very small gardens it's probably the best on the market at that price.

  • i had the 501 it never missed a beet and did a good job

I used the eliet scarifier for a good few years while involved with a lawn treatment franchise. Found adjusting the depth of cut a real pain - you have to stop the machine, loosen wheelnuts, adjust the depth, tighten everything up again and then resart. I now use a couple of Bannerman dethatchers - a touch more expensive, but so much easier to use - can even adjust the depth of cut while running.

Definatley worth the extra cost. Here's a link ( hope it's ok to post a link )

      Hope this helps.

Really depends on how many lawns you're doing and their size. If lots, with big size variations, then 1 machine is not going to suit. So maybe go 2nd hand on ebay and get a 401 and 501. They come up every so often.

If light use on small to average lawns, say upto 300sqm, then the B&S 401 will be fine. Harder use, go for the Honda, never had an issue with any Honda engine. The 401 is also better for access.

Allow for annual replacement of knives if heavy user (80hrs use), and bearings / belts every 2 years.

  • I haven't tried the eliet Scarifier but when I checked the price, I nearly choked on my coffee! I've bought an Einhell 20inch for £289 new. With easy and simple height adjustment. Completed my first job with it last week and it works a treat.

Is the Eliet really that much better to justify the price.

  • I've been hiring an eliet this week and compared to the canon and petrol Viking ones it's a million times better, easy to use, cleaner finish, everything about the machine is well thought of. Well worth the price if you ask me. Also this machine is at least 5 years think of how many times it's been hired out to careless persons and still strong.

    • Hi Oliver, is the one you've been hiring the 401 or 501? Also is it the Hayter or Honda engine? It would be really helpful to know as i'm currently looking into them like you are.

      • The 501 is simple to adjust(spring levers) , 401 has a differnt system and can take a few minutes. Mine has the Honda gx200. Had it 4 years now. BEAST!I'll need to treat it with anti rust paint this year as a precaution, but in my experience you will plough through work.

      • 501 I'm hiring, with gx200 engine, Honda.
