You can get a roller cutter from wolf. http://www.garden-goodies.co.uk/acatalog/Wolf_Multi_Change_Tools_RB... I havent used one but it looks good for what you need.

Thanks guys i will look at the wolf tool. I haven't seen a vertical strimmer though but will check that out too.I think the previous contractors have been using a mechanical powered edger as its a very uniform knife cut right along the edge of the paths. Funnily enough i saw a farmer using one when i visited recycling centre after posting the discussion but he didn't know who made it and i never got a chance to look at it. Ross, I believe Dan means use a normal strimmer but held vertically.

There are powered lawn edgers and a tool called a Reciprocator
If you have a mantis tiller you can get an edger attachment that works quite well. one disc is replaced with a wheel and the other gets the straight cutter.
