DVLA Mobile ANPR Vans in Surrey....

Came across this van just as I pulled away from a visit this morning (in fact I saw two, the other one having only rear cameras).

Corner mounted Cameras, it was driving slowly around residential roads paying special interests to cars parked in driveways (I guess for SORN's ?)

Talk about Big Brother...and your life not being your own. I hate this assumption everyone is to be recorded Guilty or not.

Personally, I feel they should do away with Road Tax anyway and place it either on fuel or MOT.

  • I agree that i'm not keen on them peering cameras into driveways, however it is those that arn't taxed (and so can't get insurance) that put road costs up for the rest of us (i'll get off my soap box now, that's the nearest to political i'll get!)

  • So thats what the road tax is being spent on, It's certainly not being used to repair potholes, some of the roads round here are like the surface of the moon.

with three vehicles I pay a lot of road tax and it annoys me that my suspension and tyres are at risk of being damaged because the roads are in such a state!!

  • If road tax was integrated with the cost of petrol, the DVLA jobsworths would not need these vans, their drivers, or to fuel them. Too radical ?

  • I'm with Claire; catch them and you'll probably find they have no insurance either. I have to pay it on all our vehicles, including the old classic as they never roll that tax-exemption to newer cars.

I've never been big on the "civil liberties" argument, you only have to worry if you choose not to pay the road tax, and then you deserve to be caught and fined.

But, fleets of camera vans? What a cost! It's been argued for years that it should be in the fuel price, but then people would complain about that.

Don't we pay enough for our fuel already?
I have said this before, if the government wanted to boost the economy it should cut the fuel duty by at least half.
