  I scarify on a dryish day, like you have said I leave the bag off as I find it's a total waste of time.
  We leave the flap open at the back making sure it's not fully open as things can fly out ( wear goggles).
  Depending on how severe the moss is we go round the edge of the lawn then up and down then either diagnal or left to right, (making sure the blades are set to a height so they don't dig into the lawn) depending on the shape of the lawn.
  If it's a really dry day you can get away with using a mower to pick up the waste if not a strong plastic rake.

  Depending upon the lawn condition, I would scarify at least making two passes and if really bad, three passes each time in different directions.
  
  Before going hell for leather with the 1st pass - find a little test area and adjust the blade settings!!!
  
  1st pass keep the blades fairly high, 2nd pass lower the blades after you have reassessed the lawn and on the final pass if required lower the blades a tad more. Don't go that deep that you are ploughing up the soil unless you are going for a "seed bed result" and major re-seeding etc.
  
  Personal preference on keeping the bag on or off, best to leave box off and rake up after each pass.
  
  I also feed a lawn after scarification as it does help aid the sward to recover from the stress of the operation.

  good job i only had a test run on my own lawn (extremely mossy !!)
  
  i just did one pass basically. it did a good job.
  
  good idea to collect up with a mower on a dry day - less back ache /bending and raking.
