Always try and used a fixed price per job and never charge by the hour - then you can factor all travelling costs into the price given, and the customer does not need to let the concept of hourly rates (which are amateurish imo) enter their mind, and you are compensated fairly for your time.
I used fixed prices already, I don't give customers an hourly rate. When I calculate a price for a job, I use an hourly rate that's based on my household & business expenses (including an estimated annual mileage) and my number of working hours.
I just wondered if I could exclude the business travel when coming up with an hourly rate and, instead, add an amount based on the distance to site and the number of likely visits.
I'm thinking that for a customer living close to home could get a cheaper quote than one sited further away.
I dont think about others prices any more - I work on an internal estimate of the amount of time it will take to do a garden, and price it up from their.
In a way, if you think about it, if further out quotes go for a more local competitor, surely it would work the other way round for you, and you would end up with a nice, tight local round, giving more earning time?
