Do you drive a Transit?

Just a really quick question to gauge my insurance costs.

I drive a transit T350, and I pay £99 per month for fully comp insurance. I have 6 years protected no claims. I also disclose that it is sign written, has wooden racking and is parked on my drive overnight.

I'm trying to work out if I can reduce my costs by running a smaller van, or is my insurance cost purely down to the area I opperate in.

How much do you guys pay on your transits?

Thanks in advance guys.

The type of van is really quite insignificant. Its all about post code, age, mileage, no claims, employment, access to other vehicles in the household, parked on street drive or garaged etc etc" the list is endles unfortunately.
  • Same van £18 per month but I'm an old codger :)

James, if you don't already I would talk to a good local Ins. Brokers. They are able to do lots of what-ifs and once you've built up a relationship you generally get good service.

For my first vehicle I went on-line and insured. It was 'easy', reasonably cost effective, but once I started adding vans, drivers, different overnight addresses it got horribly complicated and expensive (don't get me going about sharing NCD across multiple vehicles...arghhhhhhhh).

Now one call and they take care of it all, any change we require, advice about claiming, windscreens etc they all take care of arranging for us most changes etc invoiced after the fact, often get amendment fees waived. The on-line companies simply can not match the prices we get./p>

Occasionally pop in every so often and deal face to face and drop the obligatory Xmas pressie for the office. Once you get to know people, you find you get better service ;-)

  • my t350 tipper with sign writing full comp cost me £343 last year, runs out in may, but i shop around every year and play one off agains the other, this way they will reduce the premiums, also depends on how many miles you do, year of van

Exactly. We use a broker and *only* pay £4.5k for our fleet policy of three vehicles.
Believe it or not this was over £1k cheaper than insuring them seperately!

The area where my vehicles are insured seems to be the overriding factor in the cost (according to my broker)

  • I'm 32, do the normal 10-12k miles a year. 06 reg van.

    It MUST be my postcode!!

I have gone through a local broker the last two years after getting astronomical quotes online from the usual suspects. It did go up around £20 per month last year.

I'm basically trying to find ways of reducing my overall running costs and my van is my main financial drain. I own the van outright so just fuel, tax, insurance and repairs to pay for. Which is not far off 5k per year!!!!!
  • James I run a transit tipper (350 model) double cab, sign written, 6 yr no claim and am a similar age to you.
The insurance for my is roughly 1200 per annum so I personally think yours sounds a out right as you are similar to me.
Insurance has gone up for us every yr for 2-3 yr now.
  • Where abouts are you based Steve sonic?

These costs make a huge difference at the end of the year.

One of my friends was moaning about a £320 renewal the other day!
  • Try informing them if you are on any other vehicle insurance in the houshold, I saved £50 by being on another insurance only £50 but adds up.

  • I have declared that I drive my wife's car also.

It has to be mainly down to postcode I think.

I will be sitting down in the weeks up to my renewal date this year trying for a good deal, I might even get a couple of brokers on the case for me!
